Choosing to Home School
There are many reasons that families opt to home school their children instead of sending them to school everyday. Home schooling has continued to become more popular over the past few years. When you know that it is an option you have a genuine interest in, it's wise to spend some time picking it apart. It isn't something that should be entered into lightly. Take some time to think about how it benefits you and what it is that appeals to you as opposed to traditional schooling.
Home schooling your kids should be a choice that is based on what is best for them, not what is best for you. That can be tough but it has to be that way. If your kids would rather go to a public school then there is no reason to stand in their way. Schooling plays a large role in life. Let kids make these choices for themselves. Taking it out of their hands may have negative repercussions that you end up regretting.
You should always ask yourself if you have the commitment it will take to journey through the home school process with your kids. It often requires a lot more involvement by the parents, even if you are not the one doing the actual home teaching. This is clearly a position that will demand plenty of patience.
Home schooling might be a viable option if your child has special needs. Though there are many wonderful schools that cater to special needs children, some parents may feel more comfortable being part of the process in a hands on way. It's always important to explore all of the resources available for a child that needs extra assistance. Don't allow yourself to be limited. There are enough options for everyone to feel comfortable.
It's essential for parents to get much needed time alone in order to effectively care for children. Making the choice to home school should not interfere with this. Don't make the mistake of sacrificing your sanity and time away for home schooling. You should always have a healthy balance. If dedicating your time to home schooling is going to rob you of coffee time with friends or a few hours alone with a good book, then it may not be something for you. Nothing is worth giving up your entire life for when there is always going to be another way.
The ability to stay organized and on target is more than necessary if you choose to home school. You can't get sucked into allowing the kids to take a TV break or play outside. A schedule needs to be set and followed closely. If you don't have the discipline to enforce structured learning in the home then you might be better off reconsidering.
Be realistic when it comes to choosing something as detrimental to the future as education. Know your limits and don't be afraid to seek another source. Home schooling is not for everyone but it might be for your family. Spend some time in careful contemplation.
